invitations

i heart weddings...

A little while ago I was asked to design and produce wedding invitations for a friend. I wanted to achieve an understated but romantic feel and spent some time playing around with layouts and paper.

The finished design, a petite card (9.5 x 12.5cm) featured a relief heart with dusky pink lettering. The cards were hand cut (never again!) from heavy weight white cartridge paper, with a delicate inlay of 45gsm typing paper and pale grey detailing.

This project was a big learning curve. Cutting 100 cards by hand, finished to a consistent standard was really challenging. That said, the traces of the maker's hand actually turned out to be a nice touch. The cards were after all carefully designed and produced for a friend -the slightly rugged edges hinted that they had been handmade, ever more personal.

Hydrangea drawings

The hydrangea drawings were ideas to be used for a wedding invitation. With a current fixation with hydrangeas, it was that or nothing, and so these drawings came about. Capturing the bushy flowers, with their almost angular lumps of petals, I wanted to represent them in quite different ways.

Part photocopy, felt tip and pro-marker.

This was the final design, which I altered until it looked symmetrical. Text was later added...

The invitations were a great success.
